Love in Full Bloom: A Spring Engagement Session at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

There is spring, and then there is spring at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. When you couple that peak-bloom magic with two people completely wrapped up in each other, the result is nothing short of cinematic.

For this engagement session, we caught the garden on a breathtakingly bright, sunny spring afternoon. The sun was high, the energy was effortlessly vibrant, and the cherry blossoms were putting on their absolute best show of the year.

Chasing Light and Cherry Blossoms

While many photographers shy away from the brilliant, direct midday sun, we absolutely thrive in it. Bright sunlight brings out a striking, high-contrast editorial look that feels incredibly alive. It turns the soft pinks of the cherry blossom canopy into a radiant, glowing backdrop and creates those sharp, intentional shadows that give images a distinct, editorial edge.

We wandered through the iconic Cherry Esplanade, where the trees were heavily laden with soft pink petals. Instead of rigid, traditional poses, we focused on movement—catching those fleeting, documentary-style moments of laughter, stolen glances, and quiet embraces under the blooming branches.

Thinking of Planning Your Own BBG Session?

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a dream location, but capturing it at its peak requires a little strategy. Here are a few quick tips if you're eyeing this stunning backdrop:

  1. Timing is Everything: The cherry blossom bloom is a beautiful, unpredictable window that usually lasts just a couple of weeks in mid-to-late spring. Keeping a flexible eye on the garden’s bloom track is key.

  2. Embrace the Sun: Don't be afraid of a bright, clear day! Direct sunlight adds a punchy, editorial dynamic to your photos that soft overcast skies simply can't replicate.
